Cambridge English Language Assessment (CELA)

Cambridge English Language Assessment is part of the University of Cambridge and has been providing English language assessments and qualifications for over 100 years. CELA provides the world’s leading range of qualifications for learners and teachers of English. They work in over 130 countries delivering exams for nearly 4 million people a year with a mission to be the experts in language assessment and in delivering excellence and innovation.

Cambridge English Language Assessment contributed to the development of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and its examinations are aligned with the CEFR levels.

The exams cover all four language skills, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening – and assess the candidates’ ability to use a variety of structures and functions in real situations.

Cambridge English exams are accepted by 15,000 universities, employers and governments around the world. CELA exams can open doors to higher education, improve employment opportunities, and because they are globally recognised, can increase learners’ choices for study or work.

Cambridge English exams by CEFR level

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It is used around the world to describe learners’ language skills. The CEFR has six levels – from A1 for the most basic beginner to C2 for the very highest level of ability.
